I'm struggling a bit to get larger usb drives powered directly from the Roseapple Pi's usb ports.
I'm running latest Armbian server build and have nothing connected to the other usb ports (just a serial console to monitor things.
The normal PSU i use is a very high quality Blackberry 5V2A microusb charger (nice thick cables etc) and i have tied an ipad 5v2.1A and an Anker multiport charger (i think max 2.4A per port)
I have tried a seagate 320GB USB3 drive which works just fine in any usb port (usb3 or std) but using the seagate enclosure i cannot get a 640GB samsung t3 2.5 inch to work (just the not enough power type noises from the drive) .. same story with a 2TB WD 2.5 inch passport in its own enclosure
.. tried all the ports USB3 and USB's ...
.. tried a split USB3 and a split USB2 lead (so usb to 2 usb connectors one for power and 1 for data) ... no diff when plugged in to 2 RA-PI usb ports (usb3/2 or both usb2) and no difference when power taken from another external USB power adapter
Its a bit of a pain really as im sure that theres plenty of power going in to the RA-Pi and i cant see the RA-PI using much power idling along.
The Samsung 640GB states around 0.5W accessing the drive and 0.1W idle (doesnt state what it needs at connection)
I'm left with the fact that the PMU (or the crappy microusb power connector) is limiting the power to the usb ports (in particular the USB3 port which should per spec go to 0.9A)
The only thing i havn't tried really is a powered usb hub (as i don't have one to hand) or trying an OS other than Armbian ?
Has anyone got larger usb hard drives working on the RA-Pi connected directly to the the usb ports ?
